SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Tony Jones Jr. rushed for a career-high 176 yards and Jonathan Doerer kicked three field goals to lead No. 9 Notre Dame to a 30-27 victory over Southern Cal at Notre Dame Stadium Saturday night.
Ian Book threw for 165 yards and one touchdown. He also scored on an 8-yard run in the final quarter. Tony Jones Jr. rushed for 25 carries, and Cole Kmet had six receptions for 61 yards and one touchdown. Jonathan Doerer scored 12 points for three long field goals.
This game marked the 91st meeting between the Irish (5-1) and the Trojans (3-3). It was the third straight victory for Notre Dame over their longtime rivals.
USC took the lead in the first quarter with a field goal by Chase McGrath. In the second quarter, Cole Kmet scored off a 10-yard pass. Braden Lenzy scored with a 51-yard run play, and Doerer kicked a 45-yard field goal, leaving the score at 17-3. During the third quarter, Jonathan Doerer scored a 52-yard field goal. A field goal by Chase McGrath and touchdown by Amon-Ra St. Brown brought the score to 13-20. In the final quarter, another field goal by Doerer, a 5-yard pass to Tyler Vaughns, a touchdown by Book, and a 2-yard run play by Markese Stepp left the final score at 30-27.
Kedon Slovis completed 24 of 35 passes for 255 yards in his first game back after a concussion three weeks ago. Markese Stepp rushed for 10 carries, 82 yards, and one touchdown. Amon-Ra St. Brown had 8 receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown.
Next week, USC plays Arizona. Notre Dame has an open date before visiting No. 16 Michigan on Oct. 26.
